Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma welcomed a baby girl named Banks back in October of 2018, and since then the former Lizzy McGuire star has been updating her followers on progress as a mum-of-two.

Reality bites

Hilary’s also mum to six-year-old Luca – her son with ex-husband Mike Comrie – but this is her first child with Matthew … and her first baby girl.

While social media updates have been mostly mulling over the bliss of the new baby bubble, this week Hilary changed things up. She revealed that baby Banks was a colicky little mite and asked her followers for advice on how to handle a crying and generally unhappy bub.

“Calling all parents of colic babies,” Hilary posted on Instagram. “This ends right? Can you ever set them down with out them screaming OR waking up?”

“We have read everything the internet has to offer,” she continued. “Nothing besides nursing basically every hour or less helps! We have done all the obvious things … Please leave magic tricks in comments.”

She hashtagged her update with #babyforsale and honestly we UNDERSTAND!

What is colic?

Colic refers to a baby’s frequent or persistent crying and fussing. It can begin at any time during the first few months of life and often disappears around 4-months of age.

Colic doesn’t indicate inept parenting or a crabby temperament in children, you’ll be pleased to know. While it’s not known exactly what causes colic, some factors might include:

  • overstimulation
  • dietary sensitivities
  • reflux
  • hernias
  • infection or
  • nappy rash

All the magic remedies

Hilary’s followers were sympathetic and keen to weigh in with colic-busting ideas and their own experiences.

One urged her to hold tight because better days are ahead: “You will hit a magical time, where one day your baby is suddenly just magically totally happy. A whole different baby surfaces! Hang in there, mama! You got this! Take break when you need to, it’s okay to get some fresh air while baby is somewhere safe.”

“We also have a little one with bad colic,” another wrote. “It’s so sad because u feel helpless as a parent but the doctors said hopefully it gets better once they are 3-4 months. Lots of TLC and patience I guess but it’s emotional for sure.”

“Uhhhhhh I feel your pain,” someone else empathised. “Mine is 5 months old and just now a happy baby. Finally. I do think a sleep schedule helped but man … those first four months were a blur of crankiness.”

Other tips for soothing colic included probiotics, avoiding dairy while breastfeeding, drinking fennel tea, increasing the white noise in the home, keeping baby’s tummy warm, encouraging ‘tummy time’ and gripe water.

Some suggested giving the baby – wait for it – catnip! While others swore by sauerkraut juice to settle a baby’s tummy.

We’d like to point out that it’s not really advisable to give your baby catnip or sauerkraut juice. You should consult your doctor or maternal child health nurse if your baby is crying a lot and/or seems to be having tummy troubles instead.

We hope Banks feels happier and more at home in the world very, very soon. #HangInThereHil!
