The top 100 baby names for 2018 reveal some surprising trends
The Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages (Victoria) has just revealed the state’s most popular baby names and – unsurprisingly – Oliver and Olivia were the tip-top choices. Take a bow kids!
A bunch of other brilliant names ranked as super popular too, with some interesting trends emerging for both boys and girls.
Say hello to the baby boys of 2018!
Boy names veered from the traditional – hello Thomas and James – to the regal – g’day Charles, William and Harry – to the short-and-sweet- shout out to Leo, Max and Noah.
Names beginning with ‘H’ did well in the most popular list for boys with Henry, Hudson, Harrison, Harry and Harvey in the top 50 and Hamish lurking just outside.
‘L’ names were also a favourite choice for little boys born in 2018. Liam, Leo, Leon, Leonardo, Luke and Lewis were all in the top 100.
‘A’ names featured strongly for boys (and also girls!) with Alexander, Archie, Archer, Arlo, Austin, Aiden, Angus, Arthur, Adam, Ali, Ashton and Asher ranking highly.
And ‘J’ names did brilliantly too as Jack, James, Joshua, Jacob, Jayden, Jordan, Jasper, Jackson, Jaxon and Jude document as favourites for the boys of 2018. That’s a lot of ‘J’!

Names with an ‘X’ tucked away in them also featured for boys with Max, Jaxon, Maxwell, Xavier and Felix making the grade.
Other short-and-sweet names lurking outside the top 50 – but still representing in the top 100 – included Ali, Kai, Eli, Nate and Leon.

Shout-out to the baby girls of 2018
For little girls born in 2018 the trends were similar – with traditional, short-and-sweet and a touch of royalty thrown in for good measure.
Charlotte came in at number two, no doubt a bit of a hat tip to our favourite little princess. Pippa – the name of Duchess Kate sister – also popped up on the list as did Queen-y names Victoria and Elizabeth.
Three-lettered girls’ names were hugely popular with Zoe, Ava, Mia, Ivy and Eva on the top 100 list.
Names beginning with ‘A’ were hugely popular for little girls. Alexandra, Aurora, Alyssa, Annabelle, Ariana, Anna, Alexis, Ayla, Abigail, Alice, Audrey, Aria, Ava and Amelia all featuring on the Births, Deaths and Marriages list.
There was also a trend for floral and nature-related names names for little girls with Rose, Jasmine, Violet, Poppy, Daisy, Lily, Ivy, Summer and Hazel emerging as firm favourites.
Celebrity baby names made the list for girls too with Luna (the name of Chrissy Teigen and John Legend’s daughter), Willow (the name of The Bachelor’s Sam and Snez’s baby) AND Olive and Frankie (the names of Drew Barrymore’s daughters) making the grade.
