We very often hear about the most popular baby names of the year in various parts of the world, but what’s also super interesting is the upcoming baby name trends.

What’s next for baby names?

A mum on the parenting forum Mumsnet was keen to chat about these future faves. She asked other forum users which names they thought would be the next big thing.

“Which names do people think will start to become popular over the next few years?” she wrote, starting what is proving to be a very popular discussion thread.

“Which names have you started to hear more of recently that you think will increase in popularity?”

Other Mumsnet users were keen to come to the party, sharing the baby names they were hearing more of and making their own predictions based on the kids in their own community.

Here are 30 of the names they suggested would soon be popping up on the reg in playgrounds, childcare centres and classrooms – based on their own anecdotal evidence.

A return to conservatism

As we recently reported, lots of parents are dusting off names that were popular in the ’80s – or earlier – with names like Michael, Jason, John, David, Jane, Penny and Emma having a resurgence.

The Mumsnet mums agreed with this on the whole.

“I think plainer names will sound refreshing before too long,” one wrote.

They too suggested names like John, Michael, Andrew, Richard and Brian may become more popular for boys. They handpicked Susan, Karen, Helen, Anne and Joanna as more conservative options for girls.

So there you have it! The next big thing in baby names, according to mums!
