Meghan just spoke about the cruel backlash against her and we want to hug her

New mum Duchess Meghan is navigating what should be some of the happiest days of her life, but the constant media nastiness and social media trolling must be taking a toll.

“So significant for so many of us”

Meghan confirmed this publicly for the first time on Sunday, when she was overheard chatting to recording artist Pharrell Williams at The Lion King royal premiere.

A sympathetic and supportive Pharrell was heard congratulating Meghan on her marriage (and perhaps suggesting that she’s helping to fight racism and promote diversity by marrying into the royal family and welcoming baby Archie.)

“So happy for your union,” Pharrell says in his royal pep talk. “Love is amazing. It’s wonderful. Don’t ever take that for granted, but what it means in today’s climate, I just wanted to tell you, it’s so significant for so many of us. Seriously. It’s significant. We cheer you guys on.”

“Thank you,” Meghan replies. “They don’t make it easy.”

The pregnancy pile-on

While many suggest that the royal couple’s decision to raise Archie as a “private citizen” is behind the Meg backlash, the nastiness started long before that choice was revealed.

While Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding was much-celebrated – and much-watched, it was when Meghan’s pregnancy was announced that the snark switch was flicked.

People began to vilify, criticise and even abuse the new Duchess in the press and on social media. Her every move was scrutinised through her pregnancy and continued after baby Archie’s birth.

For many – and particularly for the British media – Meghan can’t do a thing right. There’s headline after headline, comment after comment, asserting that she’s not doing her job properly, not parenting properly, not dressing properly, not behaving properly.

She’s put on a brave face generally, until this recent chat with Pharrell. It must be so hard to push on positively when the criticism is so public, cruel and relentless. We’re ardently hoping she’s got a brilliant therapist to help her work through the hate and venom. #WeLoveYouMeg!

All that said, it’s clear that Meg and Harry were making the best of their big night out. They were dressed formally in black tie garb and were obviously enjoying meeting lots of high profile types, including The Lion King star Béyonce and her husband Jay-Z.

Before the movie, Meghan was heard saying “It’s a date night for us” as she grinned at Harry.

Bless her. We wish the tide would turn and the trolls and snarky media would beat a hasty retreat.
