Oprah’s thoughtful baby gift for Mindy Kaling required a TRUCK to deliver it
A Wrinkle In Time’s Mindy Kaling and Oprah Winfrey are not only co-stars, they’re solid-as-a-rock gal pals who look out for each other – and exchange gobsmackingly sweet gifts!
A present from Oprah
It was only a wee while ago that we were feeling really jelly of new mum Mindy’s blinged-out pram. Now she’s taking newborn gifts up a notch and we have to say we’re super inspired by this one’s bookish theme.
Mindy appeared on USA Today with our favourite talk-show host of all time (alongside her other co-star Reese Witherspoon) and she explained that when a call came out of the blue about a baby gift delivery, she figured she’d better be on hand to answer the door.
“I got a call from my assistant. She said, ‘Oprah’s assistant contacted me, she’d like to drop off a present.'”
“I’m thinking, that’s so nice, like, (it’s) probably flowers. I had a kid, I’m a single mom. That’s really nice Oprah remembered,” Mindy recalls.
U-Haul alert!
The plot thickened as Mindy’s assistant told her that this was no regular old postal satchel. Nu-uh.
“Two men are going to be coming to your house, they said, with a U-Haul truck,” Mindy explained.
“True,” Oprah confirmed.
“All you want in life is to hear that two men in a U-Haul truck are coming to your house because Oprah sent them,” Mindy pointed out and we have to say we agree with her.
“I was supposed to go to work that day (but I was like), I gotta be here.” Good call, girl. Good call.
100 classic children’s books
So what was this truck-worthy gift that Oprah picked out for Mindy’s daughter, Katherine?
“They arrived with a hand-carved bookcase,” Mindy revealed, “prettier than any professional dollhouse you had ever seen that contained a hundred of the classic essential books in children’s literature.”
“I held my baby up to it and I said, ‘Did you see what Miss Winfrey did for you?'”
“Each book has ‘Katherine’s Book Club’ on it,” Mindy explained, and we weren’t surprised because Oprah is nothing if not thoughtful.
“It was the best I could do”
Oprah also loved the gift, but was a tiny bit miffed it fell short of her dream present for Mindy.
“It wasn’t as perfect as I wanted it to be,” Oprah admitted. She said she wanted the bookcase-dollhouse to look like the treehouse Mindy’s A Wrinkle In Time character lives in.
“Now it looks like a beautiful castle,” Mindy said, feigning disappointment..
“It was the best I could do,” Oprah replied.
“It’s the most amazing gift,” Mindy confirmed.
