If you’ve ever had to transition your child out of their co-sleeping habit, you’ll identify strongly with Hilaria Baldwin’s big motherhood moment.

Content note: This post discusses miscarriage.

A tough couple of months

Hilaria and Alec Baldwin have four children together, almost one-year-old Romeo, two-year-old Leonardo, three-year-old Rafael and five-year-old Carmen.

Hilaria’s been tracking some of the more emotional moments of parenting on her Instagram account, last month detailing that her most recent pregnancy had sadly ended in miscarriage during the first trimester.

“There was no heartbeat today at my scan,” a devastated Hilaria wrote on Instagram last month. “So it’s over … but I have some pretty strong and amazing heartbeats right here. I am surrounded by such love and I feel so fortunate.”

“Everyone has to grow up”

Earlier this week Hilaria shared another emotional update. This time it was about baby Romeo, as she explained that her usual attachment parenting needed some tweaking when it came to her youngest little boy.

“I co-sleep with my kids while nursing them,” she explained. “It’s usually about a year. I feel very safe with it because Alec and I are both very light, stationary sleepers.”

She noted that the mechanics of sleeping alongside Romeo were proving a little challenging.

“Romeo has begun to move around much more than my other ones while he sleeps,” Hilaria wrote. “So I’ve decided that, for his safety and our sleep, he is going to learn to stay in his crib overnight.”

“It is hard … because I’m going to miss this … the cuddling at night. This pic is the last time he was in bed with us … and yesterday was the first night he wasn’t in bed with us. It was tough, and there were definitely tears—both his and mostly mine … but I know that everyone has to grow up. We will just have to cuddle that much more during the day.”

Let them go, let them grow

Hilaria’s followers sympathised deeply with this big transition and had lots of words of wisdom for the mum-of-four.

“As mothers, it is our job to let them go and grow. Their progress trumps our pain. Keep posting. It’s all so valuable,” one woman wrote.

“When we transitioned Bella to her crib I cried the most. All the little firsts and lasts are so beautiful and hard all at the same time,” another mum said.

“Every child is different. It’s great you see them as individuals,” one follower said.
