Snip snip! The interesting and varied traditions around babies’ first haircut
While lots of parents may haphazardly snip away at their baby’s locks as they’re distracted by Peppa Pig or strapped into their highchair, for other babies this occasion is much more auspicious.
Indeed, for many babies their first haircut is steeped in tradition. Let us take you through a few of the ways this event rolls out across the world and/or according to faith.
3. Muslim faith
The Muslim faith has a ceremony which involves shaving a 7 day old child’s head and anointing it with saffron. Part of this tradition involves weighing the baby’s hair and giving the same weight in gold or silver to charity.
