Snip snip! The interesting and varied traditions around babies’ first haircut
While lots of parents may haphazardly snip away at their baby’s locks as they’re distracted by Peppa Pig or strapped into their highchair, for other babies this occasion is much more auspicious.
Indeed, for many babies their first haircut is steeped in tradition. Let us take you through a few of the ways this event rolls out across the world and/or according to faith.
2. Hindu faith
In the Hindu faith, a boy’s first haircut is called choula and it happens in his first or third year of life. The child is shaven at this time to signify freedom from the past and moving into the future. Traditionally Hindu girls have their hair cut just once in their lives – at 11 months of age.
