The queen of decluttering, Marie Kondo has now extended her phenomenal tidying talents to writing for children.

In the hope of bringing joy into kids’ lives through the written word, Marie is releasing her first children’s book, entitled Kiki & Jax: The Life-Changing Magic of Friendship. The book is set to come out on November 5 and, according to Marie, is “a timeless story about friendship.”

Living clutter-free

The organisational expert and mother-of-two is already a well-known author with four popular books all about her ‘KonMari Method’, a tidying technique that has taken the world by storm. Her first book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up was a number one New York Times bestseller and helped people everywhere to find happiness and joy by properly organising their homes. Marie is also the star of Netflix show, Tidying Up With Marie Kondo where she assists in transforming people’s lives, showing them how to ‘clear out their clutter and choose joy’.

Helping kids to tidy

Her new book, a collaboration with Geisel Honor-winning author/illustrator Salina Yoon, draws on the same philosophy but is aimed at a younger audience of three to seven years. It tells the story of two best friends: Kiki, a collector and Jax a sorter. Although very different, the pair do agree about how much fun they have together. But Kiki’s things start to get in the way, so they must find a way to ‘make room for what’s always sparked joy – their friendship’.

Marie announced the upcoming release of her book on Instagram, saying “I hope that the characters of Kiki & Jax will inspire children and families to tidy and embrace joy!” And judging by the response with no less than 32,300 likes, this endearing story, will no doubt, attract as much attention as her adult books. And if it helps our children to tidy up, maybe even more so!
