Well, that was quick! Superstar singer Ed Sheeran and his wife Cherry Seaborn have welcomed a baby girl just two weeks after their pregnancy was revealed to the world.

The little girl, who they have named Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran, arrived last week, with an ecstatic Ed making the happy announcement on Instagram yesterday – the first time he’s posted since December 2019.

“We are completely in love with her”

Declaring that he and Cherry are on “cloud nine” and that mum and baby are “doing amazing” after giving birth, he also asked for privacy as mum, dad and baby Lyra settle into family life.

Along with a cute snap of a beautifully knitted woollen baby blanket and a pair of tiny baby socks, Ed posted: “Ello! A quick message from me as I have some personal news that I wanted to share with you… Last week, with the help of an amazing delivery team, Cherry gave birth to our beautiful and healthy daughter – Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.

“We are completely in love with her. Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here. We hope that you can respect our privacy at this time. Lots of love and I’ll see you when it’s time to come back, Ed x”

What’s in a name?

Fans have been quick to point out that Lyra is the name of the main character in Ed’s favourite book series, Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials

Ed revealed his love of the books in a 2015 tweet, calling them “the best books I’ve ever read.”

So it’s not a big stretch to think that this is the inspiration for little Lyra’s very pretty name, which also means ‘lyre’ or ‘harp’ in Latin. It’s also the name of a constellation and is pronounced “Lye-rah”, as in lyre.

Lyra is the first child for the notoriously private couple, who married in December 2018 in a secret ceremony on his Suffolk estate, away from the prying eyes of the world.

And while the pregnancy seemed quick to fans and followers, we’re sure Cherry and Ed had an interesting time of it while they tried to keep their pregnancy under wraps. They almost made it, too!

Congrats to the happy couple and welcome to the world, Lyra!
