A baby name trend is predicted to take the maternity ward by storm and it’s one parents-to-be are set to be rushing to tap into.

Little gems

Baby name experts Nameberry report that a “new generation of gem names [is] on the rise” and that they’re “a mix of vintage revivals and modern jewels.”

While more conventional sparkly names like Crystal, Amber and Diamond are waning in popularity, other gem names are slated to increase in popularity.

“They’ve even been embraced for boys,” Nameberry’s Sophie Kihm says of these gem names. “Onyx was one of the fastest-rising boys’ names in 2018.”

“Current favorites like Jade and Ruby have plateaued, while former hits Crystal, Amber, and Diamond have plummeted. The new generation of gem names on the rise are a mix of vintage revivals and modern jewels,” Nameberry says.

For what its worth we think that Jade, Ruby and Amber are all gorgeous names that do not deserve to plateau or plummet! And if Crystal and Diamond are faves of yours, more power to you.

That said there are lots of other less popular gem names that deserve to have their moment to sparkle and shine too.

So if you’re considering a gem name for your little one, perhaps you fancy popping one – or more – of these on your list?

Aura, Mica and Tourmaline

From this list we love Topaz (because we’re fans of the book I Captured The Castle which features a Topaz) and think that Tourmaline could be the name of a future country and western singer (think Dolly Parton vibes!) Aura is pretty gorgeous too – something between Orla and Aurora, if you will. And Sapphire is lovely too – think Saffy for short. Naw.

On the ‘boy’s list’ Mica is one of those short and lovely names which would really suit a boy OR girl and  Larimar could be cutely shortened to Larry. Bring back Larry! Jet’s another strong yet short choice and Jasper is an enduring fave. Super cute.

We have to admit we love this updated gem trend.
