This genius airline hack could take the pain out of flying with kids
Ever flown long-haul with your little loves, and wanted to ask the flight attendant for a Valium?
Join the club.
Flying with young children sucks, for them and for us. There’s the constant entertainment, the endless aisle walks, the squirming, the wailing, the shushing, not to mention your general, ‘Oh, kill me now’ vibe.
But this economy hack might put an end to all of that. Really!
Bed in the sky
Mum, Adele Barbaro, who calls herself, The Real Mumma, has shown her Facebook friends how she was able to transform some economy Air New Zealand seats into a bed.
And it’s so cool!
We have arrived in Hollywood safe and sound! We got to experience the Air New Zealand SkyCouch on our way here and for…

Flying all the way to LA, she explains in the post that her family had space to actually lie down and sleep, thanks to the airline’s ‘Skycouch’.
So what’s the hack?
Adele says the trick is to purchase a third seat for half the price with the airline, turning the row into a bed.
“The legs rest all rise to meet the chair in front and create a completely flat, large play or sleep area,” she explains.
“Paul and Harvey had a bed and so did Chloe and I. It’s the next best thing to business (but way cheaper) and perfect for long haul flights with young families. And we all slept,” she gloats (but fair enough!)
BEST!
Lots of people were quick to share their good experience of the Skycouch, too:
“Best thing we did was get the sky couch for our holiday kids slept 7 out of 14-hour flight that’s a win for me,” shared one commentator.
Another praised the airline, writing: “So glad the company thought of us passengers & put this in place! So much easier for parents ❤️.”
A few wondered if Adele needed to supply the blankets and pillows, to which she replied: “They supply it all!”
Can’t fly Air New Zealand?
The appeal of this hack certainly makes Air New Zealand a winner for parents, but what if you can’t fly with the airline?
A few parents have suggested you can create a DIY Skycouch by bringing your own pillows and blankets, as long as there is enough room.
A game-changer for families
Air New Zealand says their economy Skycouch is a ‘world first’.
“When you upgrade to an Economy Skycouch, you get the entire row to yourself. It’s totally private,” states the website.
Yep, here’s our money, Air New Zealand! And thanks Adele for telling us about it.
