Doing the laundry is one of those household jobs that never seems to end. Just as you finally get to the bottom of the washing basket, it fills up again in a matter of hours.

So much time is spent washing clothes, towels and bed linen and that doesn’t even count the hours taken to hang it all out on the line, bring it in, sort, fold and put it all away.

However, one highly organised mum in Brisbane has come up with an ingenious idea that has reduced her laundry work by an incredible two hours a week. Leanne, a nurse and mum, regularly posts on Instagram about cleaning and home organisation with over 21,000 followers under her wing.

Now, she has shared her incredibly simply laundry idea that involves nothing more than a basic clothes rack and collection of coloured coat hangers and everyone is talking about it.

I am not a fan of doing laundry however, I have created a way we’re it is not so labour intensive and boring. In our household all our clothes are hung up except for our underwear and socks. The underwear gets hung up to dry on a peg rack and folded into a draw. Everyone has a different coloured coat hanger so that it is easier to put away. I hang all our clothes on this clothes rack to dry and then hang them straight into the wardrobe when they are dry. Best of all I can hang the clothes while watching Netflix and I can do my washing no matter what the weather. . Do you enjoy washing or do you avoid it? . Cut down on laundry time

Leanne’s time-saving idea avoids hanging laundry on the line altogether. Instead, all clothes are hung on a rack, either inside or outside. Once they’re dry, they’re immediately hung up in the wardrobe.

“I am not a fan of doing laundry however, I have created a way where it is not so labour intensive and boring,” she writes in her post. “I hang all our clothes on this clothes rack to dry and then hang them straight into the wardrobe when they are dry.”

Smaller items such as underwear and socks are hung to dry on a peg rack and then immediately folded and put into a drawer.

Coloured coat hangers

Leanne takes her system one step further by colour coding the laundry, making it easier to know what item belongs to which family member.

“Everyone has a different coloured coat hanger so that it is easier to put away,” she says.

This reduces the time it takes to sort washing into piles, as well as dealing with those inevitable errors when the wrong piece of clothing is put away into the wrong cupboard. My 11-year-old daughter’s leggings always end up in my cupboard and I still can’t find a top of mine that was washed two weeks ago. I definitely need coloured coat hangers.

What do you think? I timed how long it takes me to do an entire 8kg load of washing excluding time in the machine and drying time. I have been using this system for about 2 years now and it is a game changer. No more washing baskets scattered around my house. Each family member has different coloured coat hangers which I purchased from Kmart. I also purchased my first clothes rack from Kmart. My current rack I bought from a shop that was closing down. Added benefits

Leanne’s laundry idea saves her a massive two hours a week. But that’s not all it has to offer.

“Best of all I can hang the clothes while watching Netflix and I can do my washing no matter what the weather,” she wrote.

Many of Leanne’s followers appreciated her suggestion, eager to cut down on the time they spent doing the laundry too.

“Hanging to dry on coat hangers is great. I need to hang more and use drawers less!” said one.

“Don’t mind washing but folding, sorting out takes so much of my time which i dont really like!” said another.

Laundry is one of those things that has to be done but anything that saves the time it takes and doesn’t require the perfect drying weather – and allows you to stream a few favourite episodes at the same time – has to be worth considering.

Now, I just have to get one of those racks …
