Aren’t these stories of stealth pregnancies and surprise babies amazing?

Surprise baby

This one starts with 46-year-old Monica Thompson. She’d always wanted to have a baby, but after trying to conceive for close to half her life, she figured it was never going to happen.

She admits that it was a heartbreaking reality, telling Inside Edition, “It was hard because all my friends were having kids and here I am, not having a baby.”

The thing she had most wanted in life was out of reach. Until … it wasn’t.

Last year, Monica undertook a quest to get healthy, losing 10 kilos and documenting her changing shape as she slimmed down.

She’d been feeling a bit out of sorts, but considering her age she was fairly sure it was perimenopause.

“I wasn’t showing at all”

When those out-of-sorts feelings escalated to nausea and stomach cramps, Monica headed to the doctor to find out what was going on and how to treat it.

“The doctor comes in and he asks, ‘Do you think you might be pregnant?’ I’m like, ‘Haha, yeah right. There’s no way. I’m too old to have children. I am probably going through menopause,’” Monica explained.

Blood tests revealed that she was indeed pregnant, with doctors estimating she was well into her third trimester. Needless to say, this was a giant plot twist for this soon-to-be first-time mum.

“Looking at me you would never have known, I wasn’t showing at all,” Monica says. (You can see what Monica looked like at this late stage of her pregnancy in the video below).

Meanwhile, the baby’s daddy, Monica’s fiancé, Jason had to be told. He was gobsmacked by this news too.

“Is this a joke?” he asked her. “Are you kidding with me? What’s going on?”

“What the heck?!”

The very next day Monica went into labour, with those cramps and nausea actually indicating not just that she was pregnant, but that this baby was already on the way.

She rushed off to hospital where it was discovered that she was 5cm dilated and an emergency c-section was performed.

Baby Jayden weighed 1.6 kilograms and was transferred straight to the NICU. He’s now a happy and healthy eleven-month-old.

“The day after I had him, I had to call my boss and tell him I had a baby and he couldn’t believe it,” Monica recalls.

“He was like, ‘What the heck?!’ ”

What the heck indeed. Wow.

“Wow, I’m a mom!”

Monica and Jason’s families and friends instantly rallied, making sure the surprise new parents had everything they needed to look after their newborn.

“They were so supportive. They couldn’t believe I was that pregnant, it was shocking to everyone.”

While all of this was understandably a huge shock, ultimately it was the best sort of blindside.

“I thought, ‘Wow, I’m a mom,’” Monica explains. “It felt right. I felt complete.”

We love a happy ending. Congratulations, guys!
