Third bub’s a charm

As the program unfolded, Kim took fans through the difficult decision she and husband Kanye West faced – whether to engage a surrogate or stop at two kids (five-year-old North and two-year-old Saint).

Kim is unable to carry her own child due to previous pregnancy complications. She suffered from preeclampsia and placenta accreta – where part or all of the placenta remains firmly attached, causing dangerous blood loss – with both North and Saint. These conditions can be life-threatening.

It’s complicated

Kim revealed the multitude of other complicating factors that make finding an appropriate surrogate so tricky. Luckily for Kim, she’s not only in a position to work with a surrogate, she also found a woman she really trusted to carry her baby. She explained it was a long and complex process to reach the point they’re at now.

“Getting a surrogate and finding someone that you really trust really is so much more difficult of a situation than you could really imagine. You have to like make sure that their lifestyle is healthy and they have to go through psychological testing, and it was maybe a year before we finalized our current situation.”

“But I think everything happens for a reason, because the surrogate that I really loved got approved and she is such a nice person, like she’s so easy to talk to and she’s the perfect fit for us, but we have to decide quickly, are we really going to go through with this or are we gonna wait until we feel more prepared.”

“It’s so frustrating”

Kim explained that her surrogate had to take birth control pills for a week, have her period and THEN the embryo that Kim and Kanye created could be implanted. Ten days after that, they find out whether their efforts were successful and the embryo had “taken”.

Kim had been through the process herself, with limited success, prior to engaging this surrogate.

“This is the craziest waiting game. It’s so frustrating,” Kim explained on the show, as she waited for baby news. “It’s really nerve-wracking because you know it’s only a 60 percent chance it’ll take. One didn’t work for me. I tried it and I lost one of them.”

Success at last!

Of course, we know that the surrogate’s procedure was successful, because Kim and Kanye’s baby is due early next year.

Kim says the surrogacy journey is definitely more detached, and almost surreal. It’s taking some getting used to.

“It is a weird dynamic, like I go to all the doctor’s appointments, and I try to be really present, but when you’re not carrying it yourself, it is such a balance of how much you wanna be in their lives. I don’t want to be that person who’s trying to control that every move,” Kim said.

She also admitted it’s hard to know how to behave, and what her role is, as an expectant but non-pregnant mum.

“It’s kind of weird when it’s not you, so I don’t know whether I should start eating donuts and celebrate like I would like old times or just go to the gym,” she revealed.

“I’m totally gonna forget and then a month before I’m gonna be like holy shit, we need to get a nursery!” she joked, before admitting this scenario was VERY far from the truth.
