It’s being widely reported that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are adding to their family via a surrogate, a potential sibling/s for the couple’s 4-year-old daughter North and 19-month-old son Saint.
Baby new year!
US Weekly, who are generally pretty accurate with their celebrity scoops, say the couple’s surrogate has just ticked over into her second trimester. They’re predicting a baby – or babies – in January 2018.
Kim and Kanye had been very keen to have a baby naturally, but after two very difficult pregnancies, doctors deemed a third pregnancy too dangerous. Kim suffered from preeclampsia and placenta accreta with both North and Saint, a condition that can be life-threatening.
Placenta accreta is a serious pregnancy condition that occurs when blood vessels and other parts of the placenta grow too deeply into the uterine wall. Typically, the placenta detaches from the uterine wall after childbirth. With placenta accreta, part or all of the placenta remains firmly attached. This can cause severe blood loss after delivery. – source
Kim has detailed her pregnancy struggles openly (of course!) on her website, revealing that some drastic and painful action had to be taken when her placenta was retained after North’s birth.
“My doctor had to stick his entire arm in me and detach the placenta with his hand, scraping it away from my uterus with his fingernails,” she wrote.
“My mom was crying; she had never seen anything like this before. My delivery was fairly easy, but then going through that — it was the most painful experience of my life!”
Despite best efforts, more retained placental tissue was discovered in the weeks after North’s birth and Kim required further surgery to remove the scar tissue – in the hopes that she could fall pregnant again.
As we know she did fall pregnant a second time, with Saint.
Unfortunately Placenta accreta was a problem during this pregnancy too, confirming that a third pregnancy was just not on the cards.
“I had so many complications. There were a couple little operations to fix all that so that created a little hole in my uterus, which I think made it really tough to get pregnant again,” Kim revealed.
Thankfully, they have the resources and inclination to welcome a baby via a different route.
Anyone who watches Keeping Up With The Kardashians will know just how much family means to the Kardashian/Jenner gang – and how much they dote on their children.
We wish them all the best on their surrogacy journey – and a healthy, happy baby (or babies!) at the end of it all.
