Wait, what? Kylie Jenner’s surprising last minute baby name switcheroo

Magical forces conspired at the very last minute, it would seem. “Damn, guess that’s her name,” Kylie thought at the time.

Take one thing off

Beauty mogul and Keeping Up With the Kardashians star, Kylie Jenner, appears to have taken the words of Coco Chanel very seriously. Chanel famously recommended that fashion fans “take one thing off” before they leave the house, and Kylie’s done a little mash-up of the advice, taking one thing off … her kiddo’s name!

Chatting her way through a makeup tutorial with James Charles Kylie opened up a little more on this, revealing how the name Stormi ultimately came to be.

“I was just looking at nature names, like weather – and earth-inspired,” Kylie told Charles.

“Storm was on there — just Storm. And then I was like, I kinda was ‘-ie’ like me, so then I did Stormie with ‘-ie.’ It was always Stormie with an ‘-ie.'”

So it was decided, and Kylie and Travis were so set on Stormie, in fact, that they went ahead and ordered some personalised products with the ‘ie’ version of the name on it.

At the last minute, however, there was a plot twist. That clunky ‘e’ on the end seemed way, way too much.

This is not surprising considering how unembellished many of the younger Kardashian kids’ names are – North, Reign, Chicago, Saint and Dream, for instance – and points to the fact that it was Kim and Kanye who started this trend for brevity when naming their daughter North.

Kylie says that when it came time to set her baby’s name in stone – on her birth certificate – she dropped the “e” quick-smart.

“When they called me from the birth certificate office, and I was finalizing the name, they were like, ‘How do you wanna spell it?'” Kylie explained.

“And I was like, ‘S-T-O-R-M-I,’ and they were like, ‘You sure?’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, just an I.’ Literally right then and there I just changed it to an ‘i.’ Then, I hung up the phone and I was like, ‘Damn, guess that’s her name.'”

“Stormi picked her own name”

Kylie (once again) suggested Stormi chose her own name, from the get-go.

“I had one other name in mind, but Stormi always felt like her name from when she was in the womb. It’s almost like she chose her name,” she told Charles.

This pretty much mirrors – minus one step – what Kylie said in the Evening Standard earlier in the year when she told her interviewer-sister, Kim, that Stormi’s name “just stuck”.

“I really don’t know how we thought of Storm,” Kylie said. “Her dad insisted it was him, but I feel like it was me. And that kind of just stuck with us. And then I didn’t really like just Storm — I didn’t feel like that was her name. So then it became Stormi. And it just stuck.”

“I feel like there were a lot of other names that I might have even liked better, to be honest, but I feel like Stormi picked her own name, like it was just her name.”

Kylie and rapper Travis Scott welcomed their daughter on February 1, after a very private pregnancy.
