Pippa Middleton – who is the Duchess of Cambridge Kate’s sister – welcomed her first child last month, a son for her and husband James Matthews.

The sort-of royals

In a statement, the pair said he was a bouncing baby boy and that mum and bub were doing well.

“James and Pippa have had a baby boy. He was born Monday 15th October at 1.58pm, weighing 8lb and 9oz. Everyone is delighted and mother and baby are doing well.”

Now we’re a month or so down the track, and baby name whispers have trickled down to the ever-vigilant media.

Hello Artie!

It’s being reported that the little boy has been named Arthur Michael William Matthews.

The name has special familial significance, so let’s look at them in a slightly wonky but semi-logical order …

Michael is the name of Pippa’s father – and also of James Matthews brother who very sadly died on Mount Everest back in 1999, aged just 22. A brilliant choice.

And let’s skip to William. While it’s possible that this name comes from Kate’s hubby and Pippa’s brother-in-law – the future King, Prince William, it’s also the name of a whole bunch of Pippa and Kate’s relatives.

Their long-since-passed relative Mr William Lupton had a son called William II. William II then had a son named William III.

William III is Kate and Pip’s great-great-great-great grandfather. It’s quite likely that the new parents have chosen the name with these ancestors in mind, too.

But what about Arthur?

And Arthur? Arthur is obviously a middle name for Prince Charles, Prince William and wee Prince Louis so people would be forgiven for thinking Pip and James took inspiration from them.

But again, there are lots of connections to this name on Pippa’s side of the family too.

For instance, Arthur was the name of Kate and Pippa’s aforementioned g-g-g-g grandfather William III’s son. AND g-g-g-g grandfather William III had another son named Francis – and he called one of his sons Arthur too! (He was Arthur G Lupton.)

Phew! So there you go. While it might appear that Pippa and James’ baby name copycats some royal family traditions, there’s lots of evidence that they’ve actually mined their own ancestry to come up with this very British moniker. There could well be even more Williams, Arthurs and Michaels on James’ side of the family.
