Mattel honours International Women’s Day with 17 inspirational new Barbies
Barbie makers Mattel have created a whole bunch of ace new Role Model dolls to help celebrate International Womens Day – and you’re going to love them ALMOST as much as life itself!
Inspiring women
These gorgeous dolls include women across all kinds of disciplines, industries and creative fields.
There are two different series of Role Model Barbies: the brand new Inspiring Women series is based on historical figures and new additions to the existing Shero (She hero) line of dolls – named for inspirational contemporary women.
“In honor of #InternationalWomensDay,” the good folk at Mattel tweeted. “We are committed to shining a light on empowering female role models past and present in an effort to inspire more girls. Join the conversation by sharing your role models using #MoreRoleModels.”
This year’s Shero Barbie additions are:
Bindi Irwin (conservationist, Australia), Patty Jenkins (director, USA), Chloe Kim (gold medallist, USA), Nicola Adams, (boxing champion, UK), Çağla Kubat (windsurfer, Turkey), Hélène Darroze, (world-renowned chef, France), Hui Ruoqi (volleyball champion, China), Leyla Piedayesh (designer and entrepreneur, Germany), Lorena Ochoa (professional golfer, Mexico), Martyna Wojciechowska (journalist, Poland), Sara Gama (soccer player, Italy), Xiaotong Guan (actress and philanthropist, China), Yuan Yuan Tan, (prima ballerina, China), Vicky Martin Berrocal (entrepreneur and fashion designer, Spain).
The first three Inspiring Women dolls are: Amelia Earhart, Frida Kahlo, and Katherine Johnson (of Hidden Figures fame). That’s them below!
Inspire more girls
Mattel are hoping the release of these gorgeous dolls, which are apparently currently available for pre-sale and will soon be available in store, will spark some interesting chatter about the excellent achievements of women across the globe.
“As a brand that inspires the limitless potential in girls, Barbie will be honouring its largest line up of role models timed to International Women’s Day because we know that you can’t be what you can’t see,” senior vice president and general manager for Barbie Lisa McKnight explained.
“Girls have always been able to play out different roles and careers with Barbie and we are thrilled to shine a light on real-life role models to remind them that they can be anything.”
With 86% of US moms worried about the type of role models their daughters are exposed to, we are committed to shining a light on empowering female role models in an effort to inspire more girls.
