Prince Harry starts crying as he recalls his early feelings about being a dad

Behold! Further proof that Prince Harry is a brilliant role model for men when it comes to emotional intelligence and self-awareness.

Heart on sleeve

Earlier this week, Harry showed yet again that wearing one’s heart on one’s sleeve is not a weakness, as he teared up while giving a speech that touched on his journey from a newly married man to dad-to-be.

Harry – aka Archie’s dad – delivered this very personal speech at the WellChild Awards where he met sick children and their families.

Harry spoke about his appearance at the same awards last year (when he gave a speech with Meghan by his side) and quickly became overwhelmed when he recalled the last 12 months’ events.

“Last year, when my wife and I attended, we knew we were expecting our first child — no one else did at the time, but we did — and I remember…”

At this point Harry broke off, putting his head down as some big feelings – and tears –  flooded in.

The assembled guests could not have loved it more, applauding the new dad and encouraging him to continue. Which he did.

“I remember squeezing Meghan’s hand so tight during the awards, both of us thinking what it would be like to be parents one day. And more so, what it would be like to do everything we could to protect and help our child should they be born with immediate challenges or become unwell over time.”

“And now, as parents, being here and speaking to all of you, pulls at my heartstrings in a way I could have never understood until I had a child of my own.”

From ‘playboy Prince’ to doting dad and hubby

It’s fair to say that nobody is really prepared for the transformation that becoming a parent can spark. Couple that with an immense amount of scrutiny, pressure and negativity from the media and public and it’s hardly surprising that Harry was triggered as he cast his mind back.

That said, it’s clear that he’s exactly where he wants to be in so many ways.

He’s married to a woman he loves, they’re parents to a healthy and adorable baby boy, and they’re making inroads working together on projects that are meaningful to them both.

Oh, and let’s not forget that they’re planning a second baby in the near future.

So there’s plenty of good bits amongst the thornier stuff.

It’s enough to make anyone cry, really!

This evening, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended the annual #WellChildAwards in London. WellChild aims to ensure every child and young person living with serious health needs has the best chance to thrive with the support and medical care needed in the comfort of their own home. The Duke of Sussex became Patron of WellChild in 2007, and last year both The Duke and Duchess attended the awards to honour the children and families that WellChild supports. The Duke, who first came to these awards over a decade ago, shared in his remarks tonight: “Last year when my wife and I attended we knew we were expecting our first child – no one else did at the time, but we did – and I remember squeezing Meghan’s hand so tightly during the awards, both of us thinking what it would be like to be parents one day, and more so, what it would be like to do everything we could to protect and help our child should they be born with immediate challenges or become unwell over time.  And now, as parents, being here and speaking to all of you pulls at my heart strings in a way I could have never understood until I had a child of my own.” • To find out more about tonight’s event and how you can support this very special organisation, please visit @WellChild Photos ©️ PA images
