What makes this year’s first day of school different for Prince George?

After a lovely northern hemisphere Summer which saw Prince William and Duchess Kate take their kiddos to their country home – and to Mustique with their grandparents – a new school year is set to roll out for Prince George.

A new school year

When George started school last year, Kate was in the early stages of her pregnancy with Prince Louis. She was so unwell, suffering from the horrendous hyperemesis gravidarum, that she was unable to deliver George to school on his much-anticipated first day.

Prince William went it alone, very memorably fronting up with his shy son – and sweetly welcomed by his teacher.

This morning Prince George, accompanied by The Duke of Cambridge, attended his first day of school at Thomas's Battersea in London. Their Royal Highnesses were met by the Head of Lower School on arrival, before The Duke took Prince George inside to his reception classroom.

This year, Kate is a mum-of-three and in much better health as the new school year launches on 6 September.

She’ll be right by George’s side to take him to his first day of a new class at Thomas’s Battersea – and this year a cute new baby brother will be waiting to play when he comes home (as well as sister Charlotte, of course!)

Once Kate had recovered from her early pregnancy illness, she was very often seen at school dropping George off. Indeed, just one day after Prince Louis was born, she was spotted at the school gate, keen to resume the family’s familiar routine as soon as possible.

This quick return to form just hours after Louis’ birth is perhaps an indicator of how sad Kate must have been about missing George’s first day last year. It’s clear that her babies are a priority and that missing a big milestone is a really upsetting prospect, one that only happens when things are very dire.

While you might think that parents would be a little star-struck about having the future King/s and Queen Consort in their midst, a parent at the school would like to set you straight.

“No one really gives Kate a second glance when she does the school drop-off,” the parent revealed. “We have a Victoria’s Secret model doing the school run, too, and the dads are far more interested in her!”
