The frequently-waving Princess Charlotte is always seen in cute smocked dresses, and a royal watcher has recently explained this trend.

“A clean, traditional look”

Marlene Koenig is an avid royal watcher and pens the Royal Musings blog. Marlene told HELLO! magazine that Charlotte was upholding a long-held tradition with her cute smocked frocks.

Marlene pointed out that “if you look at photos of young royal girls – from Princess Anne to Princess Charlotte, you will notice that they tend to wear smocked dresses as little girls when they are in public with their parents – getting dressed up.”

“It’s a clean, traditional look,” she says, noting that this a royal preference rather than a formal rule.

She says this frocked-up dress code often starts with royal mums and trickles down to their daughters who are dressed in matching style.

“If the Duchess is in a dress in public and Charlotte is with her, most likely Charlotte, at this age, will be in a dress,” Marlene explained, noting it’s the same loose rule for royal portraits.

No pants rule?

While pants are apparently not on the banned list for royal girls, they’re seen as non-traditional and are thus avoided for public events.

Of course, away from prying eyes, it’s probable that Charlotte wears Peppa Pig leggings and Dora the Explorer shorts like the best of them.

“I expect that when the kids are at home, playing in the nursery or in the backyard, they are wearing more casual clothes,” Marlene agrees.

No pants … yet!

Off-duty Duchess Kate is a real jeans and sneakers kind of woman, so as Charlotte gets older, it’s likely we’ll see her in pants and jeans.

Kate’s royal counterpart, Meghan the Duchess of Sussex, was recently seen wearing a slick suit (with pants!) at an official event. This might just signal that she’s keen to sidestep tradition – and should she have a daughter, perhaps her wee gal will do the same.

Tiny tuxedo suits for all the little royal girls!
