A protective Sir Elton John has taken to social media to voice his support for Prince Harry, Duchess Meghan and baby Archie as press coverage of the family hits an all-time low.

“Deeply distressed”

The Sussexes headed to Nice recently to celebrate Meghan’s birthday and were criticised for promoting environmentalism while also using a private jet for the third time since baby Archie’s birth.

Sir Elton – who famously sang Candle in the Wind at Harry’s mother Princess Diana’s funeral – expressed his horror at the treatment of the Sussexes and shared his worries for the young family of his dear friend.

The much-loved singer noted that Princess Diana’s death was as a direct result of the sort of relentless scrutiny that Harry and his family are now subject to and called on the press to cease their increasingly negative coverage of the Sussexes.

“I am deeply distressed by today’s distorted and malicious account in the press surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s private stay at my home in Nice last week,” Elton wrote on Twitter and Instagram.

“Prince Harry’s Mother, Diana Princess Of Wales was one of my dearest friends. I feel a profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana’s untimely death.”

“Cease these relentless and untrue assassinations”

Elton pointed out that the couple had been working tirelessly since they married in 2017 and now that they’ve added a baby to their family they deserved a little breather under the safest, press-proof and secure circumstances possible.

“After a hectic year continuing their hard work and dedication to charity, David and I wanted the young family to have a private holiday inside the safety and tranquillity of our home. To maintain a high level of much-needed protection, we provided them with a private jet flight.”

Responding to criticism of the family’s use of a private jet, Elton said he paid for the flight – debunking assertions that tax-payers copped the bill – and that arrangements were made to formally offset the very necessary use of a private plane.

“To support Prince Harry’s commitment to the environment, we ensured their flight was carbon neutral, by making the appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint™.”

“I highly respect and applaud both Harry and Meghan’s commitment to charity and I’m calling on the press to cease these relentless and untrue assassinations on their character that are spuriously crafted on an almost daily basis. Elton,” he concluded.

Everyone needs an Uncle Elton to step in when things get a bit nasty, don’t they? #GoodOnYouElton
