Aussie mum comes up with genius hack for safety-checking her strawberries

Posted in Nutrition.

Who would have thought that checking our strawberries for needles would ever be a thing? Sadly it’s the case in Australia right now, but if you’re looking to save time then you might want to try this nifty hack that one clever mum revealed on social media last week which has been viewed around a million times!

The strawberry crisis

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock you will know about the terrible nationwide sabotage on the strawberry industry where needles have been found inside the individual fruit across a range of brands and retailers. It’s even now spread to New Zealand, where some Aussie strawberries were sold. Needles have also been found in other fruits such as bananas and apples prompting Woolies to pull needles from their shelves as well.

Berry boycott

Naturally, everyone across the country (especially parents with young children), has gone into panic mode and as a result, farmers are having to dump unsold strawberries by the truckload because stores won’t buy or can’t sell them. As if the droughts weren’t bad enough! The whole horrible incident has since prompted an urgent social media campaign with the hashtag #smashastrawb to encourage Aussies to keep buying strawberries, but simply cut them up first to ensure there are no needles.

Mum magic

Given that strawberries are a favourite for many children (and super healthy to boot), it’s no wonder that Adelaide mum, Yasmine Lintvelt, decided to share on Instagram her simple foolproof trick for quickly checking her strawberries are safe – a re-purposed egg slicer. Total genius!

Hack goes viral

The clever mum posted the pic to encourage others to support the farmers by still buying strawberries, and it swiftly went viral with shares from other people across various social media platforms resulting in an estimated million views already.

“Strawberries don’t have the plague, in fact, this one was damn tasty. The majority are not contaminated, and if you find any needles in a pack then you can report it of course,” wrote Yasmine in her caption.

Slice it

Well, we don’t know about you but we’re digging out the old egg slicer from the kitchen drawer right now! And the best part is, you can pop all kinds of other fruit in there too. Instantly sliced healthy snacks all round!
