New Mum An Le managed to capture the first cuddle between her two premature daughters, Olivia and Zoe.

“Strong little fighters”

Posting to Instagram on International Women’s Day, An wrote:

“Our strong little women have had a tough start to life but they are strong little fighters who keep pushing through. It is quite rare that we see Zoe snuggling up to her sister, she’s always the wriggly one, but today she was happy to spend hours there.”

Beating the odds

Olivia and Zoe’s cuddle was made even more special by the fact that the two little girls are monochorionic monoamniotic twins – which means they shared the same sac and placenta in the womb.

They are also extremely lucky, apparently, monochorionic monoamniotic twins have a 50 percent chance of surviving past 26 weeks of pregnancy. They are at risk of having their umbilical cords tangling and reducing blood flow to the placenta.

To beat the odds, An apparently had ultrasounds every 2 weeks of her pregnancy and the girls were born via c-section at 28 weeks when one of the doctors was concerned they were in distress.

“It’s a moment I’ll never forget”

When they were born the girls were separated and placed on breathing support, so when the photo was taken they’d been apart for some time.

The moment couldn’t have come sooner for proud mum, An:

“It was so much more than we could have expected,” Ann told Daily Mail Australia.

“Olivia was placed on me first, then when it was Zoe’s turn she reached out her left arm and hugged her sister. My tears were flowing, it’s a moment I’ll never forget.”

An uses Instagram to document the family’s tough journey. She said life in the NICU ward can be very challenging and unpredictable.

“It’s exhausting, stressful and always unpredictable. But when I look down and see these two, I forget about how difficult things are and realise just how lucky we are to have these two.”

Hopefully, the family will have a more routine start to life, soon. An and the babies are hoping to return home within a month.
