Women often talk about the sense of loss that comes from the end of your breastfeeding days.

Sometimes it’s hard to put into words exactly what it is that you’re feeling.

A unique way to treasure a special time in your life

Breastfeeding is a powerful way to build a connection with your children, but you’re also celebrating the end of an era, and your body is now just for you!

Cherishing those memories just got a bit easier because some clever person has invented the breastmilk ring.

That is, a piece of jewellery containing a tiny portion of your breastmilk that can be wrapped around your finger as a keepsake.

More precious than a stone or a jewel

From a distance, these rings look a bit like an opal or moonstone, but the real contents are of course more precious than any stone.

Cindy Hobson creates breast milk rings, among other things, and calls herself a DNA artist.

As Cindy writes on her website, she decided to start creating these rings and other bits and pieces of jewellery after losing her own stillborn son.

“Being able to hold something so meaningful and bring comfort and attachment to one’s life after loss, be it the death of a dear loved one or the end of a breastfeeding journey, brings with it healing, accomplishment and a sense of achievement. I believe we should be able to honour all achievements and losses in life, it makes us stronger and prepares us for new chapters.”

How are they made?

The method varies between artisans but apparently, most designs usually require about 2 tablespoons of breastmilk to be collected and then sealed in a plastic bag before being sent off to be made into your precious keepsake.

Depending on who you choose to make the piece of jewellery, you can also opt for earrings or even a necklace.

Whatever it is, the keepsake will be truly unique to you and your family.

Choosing which finger to put it on

Which finger you choose for your very personal ring is up to you, but it’s widely believed that each finger has a particular emotional significance, with the “ring” finger believed to have a direct connection to your heart and feelings of love.

Awww.

So, there’s that lovely tidbit too.

What a beautiful gift for the new mum in your life. Especially with Mother’s Day on the way!
