All babies cry – and some babies cry a lot. Sometimes you’ll understand what your baby is trying to tell you but often it can take a bit of deciphering.
Most commonly, it’s because they are hungry or wet, so feeding and changing are two of the most obvious ways to settle a crying baby. But what if you’ve done this and bub is still crying? Here are all the common reasons babies cry (and what you can do to stop it!)
Make sure you talk to your health care provider about any ongoing concerns you have about your baby’s crying or discomfort.
5. They simply want to suck
When there is nothing to suck on (a breast, a hand, a bottle or a dummy), this can cause your baby confusion. The sucking reflex is strong in infants and is commonly used as a soothing mechanism.
You can offer them something to suck on, such as a dummy, or a clean finger. If you are breastfeeding, offering the breast will usually soothe your baby, so take full advantage of this!
