The 10 most annoying songs that kids love (and parents hate)
When you have children there are songs that get played over and over again at parties, playgroups and preschools. Little kids love them – adults not so much. Here are ten of the most annoying tunes on rotation that will have you begging for something else.
1. Happy – Pharrell Williams
This is a great song, there’s no question about that, but do we have to hear it A THOUSAND TIMES?! From the movie Despicable Me 2, it was even nominated for a 2014 Academy Award and was the number one song in the world that same year, but that still doesn’t give it the right to never leave the speakers. Happy? I think not.
2. Who Let The Dogs Out – Baha Men
Baha indeed. These dudes from the Bahamas are still laughing their asses off about this ridiculous song – all the way to the bank! First released 17 years ago – YES 17 YEARS – it’s still being played to kids like it’s the best thing out. It was a bad song then and it’s a bad song now – give it up people!
3. I Like To Move It – Reel 2 Real feat. The Mad Stuntmen
If you thought the dogs were let out a long time ago, well hold onto your knickers because this crazy track was released 24 years ago – SAY WHHAAAAAATTT?! Yep that’s right, I was a child myself when this first came out. So why is it still getting played? I blame the movie Madagascar (which featured a cover version) but even that was 12 years ago so what gives?? Move along please.
4. Let It Go – Idina Menzel
Yes, let it go please! From the smash hit animated film Frozen it never stops being played (especially if there are little girls around) and it’s beyond annoying. The worst part is this Disney number will then get stuck in your head for HOURS. It grabs hold of your brain and Does. Not. Let. Go.
5. Macarena – Los del Rio
Another oldie – but definitely not a goodie. I was still in high school when this hit the airwaves around 1995 with its video clip featuring sexy chicks of all races doing a cringeworthy dance routine while two old Spanish guys sing the chorus. I’m ashamed to admit that I busted out the routine a few times myself when I was younger, but fast forward to now and if you see any adults getting their Macarena on at a kid’s party, run and hide – immediately.
6. Gangnam Style – Psy
Sigh. Another catchy dance routine. Okay, I’ll give Korean musician Psy this – the video is pretty funny and the song is not bad either. But once you’ve heard it a zillion times it’s not so funny anymore and makes you want to slap the next person who ‘giddy ups’ their way past you to the cake.
7. Firework – Katy Perry
Ah Katy Perry, idol for little girls everywhere. There are definitely no fireworks happening for me though when this song comes on. It’s not a bad track itself, but once again it’s the constant replay that gets you. And thanks to appearing in several children’s films like Madagascar 3 (that darn Madagascar again) and more recently Sing, it’s not going to disappear any time soon.
8. Shake It Off – Taylor Swift
Just like Katy, Taylor has quite a few songs that kids absolutely love but this would have to be the top favourite. Catchy and poppy, it might be cute to watch your little ones shaking their booties to it but unfortunately afterwards you literally can’t shake it off. Trust me I’ve tried.
9. Call Me Maybe – Carly Rae Jepsen
This song is so perky it’s almost it’s own life force, seriously. Sugar pop to the max, it’s beyond cheesy and will make you want to kill yourself if by any chance you happen to be hungover when the kids are rocking their little hearts out to it. They should put a warning label on this track for parents.
10. Can’t Stop The Feeling – Justin Timberlake
The latest tune to do the kiddie rounds is from good old JT. From the animated flick Trolls it’s super funky and catchy which is how you know it’s going to be around for a long, long time. I quite like this song but ask me again in a year and I think we’ll have a new contender for the number one spot on this list.
Did we miss any? What children songs can’t you stand?
