Last week Tessa James spilt the beans, letting her followers know that she gave birth to a baby boy earlier this year/late last year.

He’s a little Saynt

Previously, we’d known she had a baby – possibly late in December last year – thanks to Instagram sneak peeks, but we had no idea it was a little boy.

Now the Daily Telegraph has revealed Tessa and Nate’s new son’s name is Saynt Myles – a slight tweak on the widely-banned ‘Saint’.

Nate and Tessa are not the only ones to choose this virtuous name – although the spelling they settled on seems quite unique.

Keeping Up With the Kardashians star and beauty co CEO Kim Kardashian West and musician Kanye West named their son Saint. Cad-about-town Thomas Ravanel and reality TV star Kathryn Dennis of Southern Charm fame did too. Actor Selma Blair’s son’s middle name is Saint (Arthur Saint), and musician Dave Grohl’s daughter’s middle name is Saint (Ophelia Saint).

“For some other reason”

In NSW, the government’s legislation allows plenty of room for banning names the authorities deem are not in the best interests of the child – or the public. The rules state that a “prohibited name means a name that is obscene or offensive, or could not practicably be established by repute or usage: because it is too long; or because it consists of or includes symbols without phonetic significance; or for some other reason; or includes or resembles an official title or rank; is contrary to the public interest for some other reason.”

Saint seems to be part of the “official title or rank” category. Or perhaps the “for some other reason” category. Suffice to say it’s not allowed.

While we couldn’t find a definitive list of NSW banned names – and Tessa and Nate’s baby birth was apparently registered in NSW – we did spot a Victorian government list of banned names. The traditionally spelt Saint was on that too:

Admiral, Anzac, Australia, Baron, Bishop, Brigadier, Brother, Cadet, Captain, Chief, Christ, Commodore, Constable, Corporal, Dame, Duke, Emperor, Father, General, God, Honour, Judge, Justice, King, Lady, Lieutenant, Lord, Madam, Majesty, Major, Messiah, Minister, Mister, Officer, Premier, President, Prime Minister, Prince, Princess, Queen, Saint, Satan, Seaman, Sergeant, Sir, Sister.

“Very grateful”

Tessa was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2014.  She promptly underwent chemotherapy to fight the disease, unsure of whether it would affect her fertility. Just a few short years later, she was pregnant, and earlier this year, Saynt was born. The new mum-of-one is not taking any of this for granted.

“It’s really wonderful,” Tessa told the Sydney Morning Herald after Saynt’s birth. “Things are going really well and we’re all really content and healthy and happy.”

“I’m very grateful for my health … I am just trying to look after myself and be happy and healthy.”
