Mum upset her husband and mother-in-law secretly changed baby’s name
Here’s a little tale about a new mum and her mother-in-law and it might just make your blood boil. Let’s begin …
A secret switcheroo?
A brand new mama was very, very stoked with the middle name she and her husband had chosen for their little boy. They had settled on ‘Finley’ and it was pretty much a done deal. Hooray.
Except … it wasn’t. Turns out her two-month-old baby’s middle name was actually registered – by her husband – as Finlay … With an ‘A’.
This slight switcheroo was not done by mistake. Apparently it was all part of a mother-in-law’s evil master plan. Ye gads!

“More masculine”
Writing to media outlet Slate’s parenting advice column, the mother of the now two-month-old baby in question shared her upsetting situation.
“Apparently his mother guilt-tripped him into doing this while I was asleep after my emergency C-section,” she wrote.
The MIL apparently also wanted to change the baby boy’s first name, so this middle name tweak was a sort of crappy compromise.
“She thinks that ‘Finlay’ is more masculine than ‘Finley’,” the mum continued. Whut?
So, unbeknownst to the recovering mum, her hubby went ahead and registered their baby’s name … with the spelling his mum preferred. Oh. No.
“I, of course, am furious,” the angry mum wrote. “His mother even sent a Christmas gift to middle name ‘Finlay’ and when I made a comment to my husband he didn’t even have the decency to tell me! He just let me keep believing for two months that our son’s middle name was spelled Finley when it legally isn’t!”

Apparently her husband regretted kowtowing to his mum as soon as the baby’s official records – with the tweaked name – arrived at the family’s home.
Calling her MIL a “manipulator” the new mum suggested this act “blatantly disrespected me and the name my husband and I had chosen for our son.”
“I will be legally changing my son’s name to the correct spelling,” she wrote, signing off her post with the pen name Mama Bear. #Gosh
We don’t even know what to say about this, but there are obviously some complicated dynamics going on in this family. Our vote would be to get some couples counselling and nut out how to rebuild the trust lost after this episode – and a strategy for managing what is clearly a divided family.
