Kim Kardashian is an easy target for online trolls and negative nannies. Their latest efforts leave a lot to be desired.

Passionate campaigner

Last year Kim was ridiculed for her interest in prison reform and slammed for visiting Donald Trump in the Oval Office. But Kim’s actually, truly passionate about sparking change around this issue and is determined to tackle the incarceration rate – especially of minority groups – head on.

Late last year Kanye West spoke to Extra about his wife’s interest in seeing justice done, noting that Kim “is in law school now and it’s extremely serious to us. That’s all we focus on, helping people that don’t have a voice, breaking down the class systems,” Kanye said.

“There’s two million African Americans incarcerated now … We’re going to get people out, period.”

“Stay in your lane”

Kim’s not playing and her visit to Trump’s office was not a publicity stunt. Her pleas for clemency have influenced the release of great-grandmother Alice Marie Johnson and several other unfairly imprisoned people since.

Now Kim’s not only set to welcome a fourth baby, but has got her head down and is studying law. It’s a formal step towards being even more effective in her prison reform efforts.

Not everyone is happy about this though. She’s been told to “stay in her lane” and come under fire for seeking an education many deserving people could never afford.

“Create your own lanes”

Kim fired back on Instagram yesterday, explaining exactly what she’d taken on – and it’s honestly no walk in the park.

“Last year I registered with the California State Bar to study law,” Kim posted. “For the next 4 years, a minimum of 18 hours a week is required, I will take written and multiple choice tests monthly. As my first year is almost coming to an end I am preparing for the baby bar, a mini version of the bar, which is required when studying law this way. I’ve seen some comments from people who are saying it’s my privilege or my money that got me here, but that’s not the case. One person actually said I should ‘stay in my lane.'”

Kim’s seeking to be more impactful and gain the qualifications which will help her help more people, and she hopes she can inspire others to do the same.

“I want people to understand that there is nothing that should limit your pursuit of your dreams, and the accomplishment of new goals,” she wrote. “You can create your own lanes, just as I am.”

No special treatment

Responding to criticism that she’d perhaps had some strings pulled to get her where she is, she clarified the circumstances for followers.

“The state bar doesn’t care who you are,” she pointed out. “This option is available to anyone who’s state allows it. It’s true I did not finish college. You need 60 college credits (I had 75) to take part in ‘reading the law’, which is an in office law school being apprenticed by lawyers. For anyone assuming this is the easy way out, it’s not.”

This move does not come without dedication and Kim outlined exactly what sacrifices she’s been making.

“My weekends are spent away from my kids while I read and study. I work all day, put my kids to bed and spend my nights studying,” she explained. “There are times I feel overwhelmed and when I feel like I can’t do it but I get the pep talks I need from the people around me supporting me. I changed my number last year and disconnected from everyone because I have made this strict commitment to follow a dream of mine.”

“It’s never too late to follow your dreams,” Kim urged.

I want to thank Van Jones for believing in me and introducing me to Jessica Jackson. Jessica along with Erin Haney have taken on the role of my mentors and I am forever grateful to them both putting in so much time with me, believing in me and supporting me through this journey. This week I have a big torts essay due on negligence. Wish me luck ✨⚖️
