Back in October last year, Hilary Duff gave birth to her second child – a wee girl name Banks. The baby’s father is musician Matthew Koma and while the couple are besotted with their baby, it hasn’t all been plain sailing.

Parenting real talk

Experience – Hilary’s already mum to six-year-old son Luca, with ex-husband Mike Comrie – certainly doesn’t guarantee a smooth ride when it comes to mum life. Hil’s not been backward in coming forward about how hard parenting a newborn can be.

She recently spoke about baby Banks’ constant crying, appealing for advice from followers.

“Calling all parents of colic babies,” Hilary wrote on Instagram earlier this month. “This ends right? Can you ever set them down without them screaming OR waking up? Please leave magic tricks in comments.”

“I’m proud of myself!”

Now she’s celebrating the small victories parenting can bring, sharing a blow-by-blow account of her morning with followers and congratulating other mums on … putting one foot in front of the other in often trying circumstances!

“One hundred percent real talk,” she posted on Instagram a few hours ago.

“This is the first day I had two kids on my own on a school morning. Breastfeeding and making breakfast, getting 2 kids and myself dressed and packed and out the door while tripping over 4 dogs and feeding the damn fish was not easy. But I did it. And I’m proud of myself!”

“I’m proud of every mom”

We’re proud of you too, Hilary, because this is even more difficult than it sounds. (And it sounds very difficult!)

“I’m proud of every mom out there who MAKES IT FREAKIN HAPPEN. All day! Everyday!” she continued. “You are the shit! Bad ass, super goddess , world taker oner and you deserved to be praised.”

“Laying outfits out for me baby and Luca was essential,” Hilary then revealed. “I even got 5 minutes to do somemakeup ….. then turned around to see Luca had used my lipstick as warrior paint on his face.”

You take the good with the bad, right?!

Preach, Hil!

Hilary’s followers empathised very deeply with her getting-out-of-the-house scramble and shared their own little wins in the comments under her post.

“Yes! You go mama!” one posted. “Mornings are so hard with 3 kids. Me and my baby girl are usually still in pyjamas at school drop off!”

“PREACH IT MAMA!!!” another follower yelled. “I get up at 6 am and get myself dressed in 10 minutes and then wake up my 2 and 4 year old for school, get them out the door by 7:20, work 9 hours and then go get them at 5. I am TIRED all over. And I look like Shrek most mornings. But I get it done.” PHEW! Fist bump to you mama because that sounds blinking tricky.

“I so needed this today!” someone else posted. “I have two littles, 4 months and 21 months, and had to get them out the door and to daycare by myself today. I was a hot mess! Thank you for being so real. Being a mom is hard, but we got this!”

We have to say we love it that Hilary isn’t sharing a glossy version of motherhood. Life in the parenting trenches is hard no matter who you are. Talking about it – and sharing helpful hacks – makes things feel a little more doable and ensure parents feel a little less isolated in their struggles, too.
