“Tone it down”: Prince William admits the one thing he needs to give up
Prince William and wife Duchess Kate just welcomed their third child into the family, and Wills says wee Prince Louis has sparked a sacrifice that is hitting him deep in the feels. Sort of.
The need for speed
Visiting the Isle of Man yesterday, William sat astride a brilliant hand-built Norton SG7 motorbike – at the annual Isle of Man TT Races. Wills chatted with other petrol heads motorcycling enthusiasts about biking trips he’d been on over the years, wistfully noting he “absolutely loves” them but life has dictated a more cautious approach.
“I’m a father of three, I have to tone it down,” he confessed, adding: “I miss the big trips, for me biking was always about being with everybody else.”
William said he’s not the only one in the family who’s a little obsessed with motorbikes, telling attendees of the race that he and Prince Harry often used to ride together and “basically try and hit each other.”
“On the back-burner”
CEO of Norton Motorcycles Stuart Garner – who was also at the event – said William was not kidding, referring to him as a “bike guy” who “understands motorbikes.”
“He was just saying being on a dirt bike as a kid, just having a real-world experience growing up, all of us here have done that and he’s done the same,” Stuart told the assembled media contingent.

It’s not the first time William’s spoken wistfully about his bike riding past. Last year he chatted to MBE recipient and World Superbike champion Jonathan Rea at a Buckingham Palace about his love of motorbikes too.
“I know he’s a bit of a motorcycle fan himself,” Jonathan said back in November, Hello magazine reports. “We talked about his bikes and the fact that he has put it on the back-burner a little bit because of his children now.”
Kate has admitted she is “filled with horror” when William is out riding, and in April revealed that despite all the public chatter about him easing up “he’s still riding it!”, Express reports.
Sorry not sorry
Aw … poor William. All the sad sitting on motorbikes and pretending he never rides them. We can see the agony written all over his face. #MuchAngst
Still, we’re guessing he’s not the only one that has made sacrifices in the name of family.
We’re certain Kate’s actually put some of her own passions on hold too. She used to play hockey for instance, and we haven’t seen her brandishing a stick in heels – or any other shoes – for at least five years.
We’ll be spying Prince William again this Queen’s Birthday weekend – along with Duchess Kate, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
The family will be on the balcony of Buckingham Palace with the rest of the royal family for the annual Trooping The Colour ceremony. (We’re hoping that tiny Prince Louis might pop by too, ahead of his impending christening!)
