Holidays with kids don’t always have to involve a resort pool, caravan park or kid’s club. Exposing young children to different cultures and people can really broaden their education and understanding of different societies – and you might learn a thing or two as well!

Here are Lonely Planet’s top 10 culture-rich travel destinations for 2018 that everyone in the family can enjoy.

The adventure begins with getting to Orkney, an island which you get to via ferry. Boasting 5,000 years of history to explore, highlights include ruins of a Neolithic village at Skara Brae, the viking legacy at Kirkwall and discovering the role Orkney played in World War II. The kids can also collect cowrie shells on the beach, watch a spot of folk dancing or devour the super sweet treat, Scottish tablet.

For more holiday ideas and trends, Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2018 is available now in paperback for $24.99.
