Easy homemade chocolate custard recipe

  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1½ tbsp cornflour
  • 1½ tbsp cocoa
  • 1½ tbsp caster sugar

Method

This recipe makes enough to feed my three young boys and it will also serve two older children. However, you can easily double it to feed your entire family.

  • Place the milk and vanilla extract in a small saucepan and cook over a medium heat until it begins to simmer.
  • In the meantime, place the egg yolks, cornflour, caster sugar and cocoa into a separate bowl (making sure the bowl is big enough to also hold the milk mixture) and whisk until paste forms.
  • Whisking constantly, slowly add the heated milk mixture to the bowl with the egg yolk mixture and whisk well.
  • Carefully transfer the custard mixture back to your saucepan and cook over a medium to low heat, stirring constantly for 5-6 minutes or until the chocolate custard mixture has thickened and it coats the back of the spoon.

Divide the chocolate custard between your serving bowls or store it in the fridge for up to two days.
