We were chatting in the office today about some friends and acquaintances who had given their kids’ really interesting and unusual middle names.

New-school middle names?

The names in question were Danger and Power … and it got us wondering if this was a brilliant new trend that we missed the memo on?

Perhaps new parents are steering away from traditional baby names?

Maybe they’re thinking “well if we get this extra name, let’s make it something surprising and amazing!”

We dug a little deeper and realised that while we’re noticing unusual middle names popping up in our circle, that they’ve been popping up elsewhere too. We also realised this unusual middle name thing is not a new movement.

That said, it looks like this practice is destined to be a fully-fledged trend.

Celebrity middle names

Lots of celebrities have really surprising middle names, so perhaps they are contributing to this trend.

For instance singer Billie Eilish’s middle names are Eilish Pirate Baird. Yep. Her surname is actually O’Connell.

Zach Galifianakis’ parents gave him the middle name Knight.

Singer Adele’s middle names are Laurie and Blue. The name Blue is becoming more and more popular, it should be noted.

Actor Kate Hudson’s middle name is Garry. Unusual in that it’s not a name often given to girls. Similarly, Demi Moore’s middle name is Gene.

And if we’re talking gents, James Corden’s middle name is Kimberley. Matt Damon’s middle name is Paige and Richard Gere’s middle name is Tiffany.

It’s a thing

So what about non-celebrities? Well, there are much more of those types of parents, so it’s fair to say that they are leading the interesting ‘power’ middle-name trend.

Parents on the popular forum Mumsnet have chatted about this very topic, and some of the less popular middle names they were impressed by include …
