Co-parenting isn’t easy after the breakdown of a relationship but Home and Away actor James Stewart and The Wrong Girl actress Jessica Marais seem to be doing a pretty ace job of it. With the former couple both accompanying their daughter Scout on her first day of school.

Big school moment

The first day of school is a big deal for children, and their parents – sob! So it’s no wonder that 42-year-old actor James Stewart, shared the milestone moment on his Instagram account Thursday. What was surprising is that his cute snap featured not just himself and his five-year-old daughter Scout, but also his ex-partner and Scout’s mama, Jessica Marais.

“First step into big school.. I think Jess and I are more nervous than Scout.. hah! Argh!” the proud, nervous dad-of-one captioned his post.

Not getting along

The ex-couple, who met on the set of Packed to the Rafters, broke off their engagement in May 2015 and while they have always seemed to do a great job of co-parenting Scout, a heated public argument between the two made headlines in February this year, prompting rumours they were struggling to get along.

James also indicated last year in a interview with Sunday Life, that Jessica’s work commitments meant that he was filling in the role of full time parent to Scout at the time of the interview.

“I am the full-time carer for Scout as Jess is busy working and travelling a lot,” James said in the interview. “When Jess is back, Scout is shared 50/50,” he added. While some suggesting this arrangement is the source of their tension, we think they should both be applauded for their flexible co-parenting approach.

Co-parenting at its best

Judging by this latest family photo, and one James shared back in August, they both seem happy to put their differences aside wen it comes to keeping Scout happy and supported. We’re sure Scout loved the fact that both her mum and dad were there to support her, unlike poor Prince George who only had Prince William his first day of school (as pregnant mum Kate was too ill to attend).

James’s post has received tons of elated messages from well wishers who are loving the strong co-parenting front they are presenting for their daughter.

“Love this! Love that no matter what, you’re there together for your beautiful daughter’s first day.”

“James & Jess you two are just what every parent should be!! There child is number one!! ALWAYS!! I hope Scout has an amazing 1st day!!”

Co-parenting is hard, and we applaud you guys for putting your daughter first.

Congrats on your first day of school Scout, and keep up the great co-parenting work James and Jess!
