The top family-friendly cities in Australia revealed

The results are in! The best place in Australia to call home if you have kids is Wagga Wagga in country New South Wales. Where are the other places that boast the healthiest families, the highest income and the safest communities? Come see if your city made the list.

Australia is already considered one of the best places in the world to be a mum and Melbourne has topped the list as the most liveable city in the world five years in a row. But what are the best Australian cities for families?

The Suncorp Bank Family Friendly City Index monitors the most populated 30 cities in Australia and ranks them according to which city is the most family friendly across key indicators including income, mortgage stress, schools, unemployment, immunisation, road safety, community involvement, health and community safety.

The top ten overall most family-friendly cities in Australia (based on all of the above factors) last year are:

  1. Wagga Wagga (NSW)
  2. Canberra (ACT)
  3. Albury-Wodonga (NSW/VIC)
  4. Toowoomba (QLD)
  5. Sydney (NSW)
  6. Hobart (TAS)
  7. Ballarat (VIC)
  8. Bendigo (VIC)
  9. Melbourne (VIC)
  10. Mackay (QLD)

In terms of safety, NSW regional city of Wagga Wagga takes the top spot for Australia’s safest city, having the greatest number of residents who feel comfortable walking around the city alone at night.

The cities with the Australia’s highest immunisation rates include Albury/Wodonga followed by Bundaberg and LaTrobe Valley. No capital cities rate in the top ten.

Perth has the healthiest residents in Australia, closely followed by neighbouring city Bunbury while capital cities Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne round out the top five placegetters.

Sydney and Melbourne have the least crowded school classrooms in the country, while Toowoomba, Ballarat and Hervey Bay rate the best of the regional contenders.

Canberra easily outstrips other capital cities including resource booming Darwin and Perth to remain Australia’s wage capital.

Other cities that made some of the top ten lists in terms of employment, income, health and safety include Brisbane, Darwin, Burnie, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Ballarat, Newcastle, Mandurah, Hobart, Coffs Harbour, LaTrobe Valley, Wollongong, Geelong, Cairns, Townsville and Gold Coast.
