Prince Charles has turned 70 and the palace is rolling out the birthday celebrations. They shared some brilliant new photos of Charles and family yesterday and it was one of the many ways they marked this special occasion.

“A privilege for any mother”

The Queen threw a lovely party for her eldest son and successor last night, which the younger royals and other fancy types attended.

The monarch gave a glowing speech … and it falls firmly into the proud mum basket.

“It is a privilege for any mother to be able to propose a toast to her son on his 70th birthday,” the Queen told guests. “It means that you have lived long enough to see your child grow up.”

“It is rather like —to use an analogy I am certain will find favour — planting a tree and being able to watch it grow,” Her Majesty continued.

  More on the royals:

“My mother saw me turn 70, of course. And she was heard to observe that 70 is exactly the age when the number of candles on your cake finally exceeds the amount of breath you have to blow them out,” she reportedly went on.

“Her Majesty described The Prince as ‘passionate’, ‘creative’ and as ‘a Duchy original’ ” an update on The Royal Family’s Instagram account read.

A nod to Diana

Clarence House – the royal residence where Charles and Camilla are based – shared a sort of ‘History of Charles’ photo montage on the socials to celebrate his 70 years.

Amidst the images tracing Charles’ life from birth to now was this lovely one of him with then-wife, the late Princess Diana, on board the royal yacht. They’re cuddling a preschool-aged Prince William and a baby Prince Harry – and still looking relatively chipper.

“A big inspiration to me”

Of course, the Queen was not the only one keen to wax lyrical about Prince Charles. Charles’ eldest son Prince William spoke of his dad as an all round good guy and “inspiration”.

“His unwavering commitment to rural issues and the countryside has been a big inspiration to me and something I am keen to emulate and teach my children about,” Will said.

We’re guessing Harry will pipe up later today with his thoughts on the future King aka “Pa”.

Charles’ birthday was also marked with a special shindig with other fellow 70-year-olds, a guest editorship of posh mag Country Life – and a secret present from Camilla (which she was not keen to divulge details of to curious press) to name but a few.

We hope you enjoyed the latest instalment of “Learning To Like Prince Charles”.
