A star of one of Bravo’s popular Real Housewives franchises is facing hospitalisation after a pregnancy complication caused her to gain close to 8kg – in just one week.

“Baby is fine but …”

Real Housewives of Atlanta star Kenya Moore has just been diagnosed with a potentially dangerous case of the pregnancy condition pre-eclampsia. Kenya says that while her health is being monitored closely, she’s facing a possible induction if things go sideways.

“I made fun of my swollen feet at @cynthiabailey10 party,” she explained on Instagram, referring to her fellow RHoA co-star Cynthia Bailey.

“Next day my tests came back for possible pre-eclampsia … I gained 17 lbs [7.7kg] in ONE week due to severe swelling and water retention, high blood pressure, and excess protein in urine. This is NOT normal! I took more tests. Baby is fine but if they come back higher Baby Daly will have to come same day.”

And dear Lord they look super-dooper uncomfy. Poor Kenya.

Not to be trifled with

The pregnancy condition pre-eclampsia causes high blood pressure and protein in the urine. In mild cases, blood pressure may be slightly raised.

In more serious cases blood pressure will be very high – and organs such as the kidneys, liver, brain and blood (in particular, the blood clotting system) can be affected.

Untreated pre-eclampsia can be fatal or cause convulsions, kidney failure, liver failure, blood clotting issues.

A challenging ‘geriatric’ pregnancy

Kenya – who is 47 – married hubby Marc Daly last year, and announced her self-described “high-risk” pregnancy in April of this year.

What followed – in typical Housewives style – was speculation over the truth of her pregnancy news and allegations that she was using a surrogate.

It’s clear that she’s not using a surrogate, as subsequent updates have shown, and is in fact battling a very challenging pregnancy that may result in an early delivery.

“You’ve got this”

In the wake of her pre-eclampsia reveal, other mums and Housewives fans took to Instagram to send supportive messages to Kenya – and share their own experiences.

“It’s no joke at all,” one wrote. “I had pre-eclampsia with my 1st son. They induced 2wks early. I had eclampsia with my 2nd. They induced 4wks early. Stay positive, get plenty of rest, drink plenty of water keep eating healthy. You got this.”

“The same thing happend to me when I was pregnant with my baby girl,” another Instagram follower posted. “I had severe pre-eclampsia. I had to give birth to her at 31 weeks. She had only 1.349 grams. She had to stay for 6 weeks in an incubator. Now she is 5 years old. Perfectly healthy. These little early bugs are big fighters. Prayers for you and the baby!

Peachy babies

Kenya’s not the only Real Housewives of Atlanta alumni who is expecting a baby at the moment. The volatile Porsha Williams is also expecting her much-wanted and long-anticipated first child.

Kenya has hung up her Housewives peach, for now, telling US Weekly she had other very important things on her plate.

“I have decided to take this season off to focus on my high-risk pregnancy in a healthy and drama-free environment,” she explained. “I thank Bravo for this amazing platform that has allowed me to grow, flourish and appreciate the value of what is truly important in life.”

Top marks to Kenya for raising awareness of pre-eclampsia via her social channels. We wish her all the best for these final weeks of her pregnancy and hope she’s got those feet up in front of some excellent trashy TV.
