You could talk to a dozen women about childbirth and they will all have different experiences of labour pain.

Physiotherapist Dr Laura Whitburn from La Trobe University was fascinated in the variety of experiences when it came to childbirth, and so she conducted research with new mums in Melbourne in an effort to determine why women experience labour pain differently.

What she discovered is that it’s often a number of factors that contribute to the way a woman perceives pain.

Laura explains why it has nothing to do with the baby in your belly, and everything to do with what’s going on in your head.
