This time last year, Australia was on fire. Everyone was affected by the bushfire season, not just those living in more rural areas. At the time it was predicted that catastrophic bushfires would be normal every Christmas. It turns out that’s not the case so far this year.

Author Polly Marsden is the creator behind the ABC TV series Big Weather and How to Survive it. She knows that while this year is not looking anywhere near as dire as last year, “big weather” and big bushfires will continue to happen. It inspired her to write the picture book for kids, The Bushfire Book: How to be aware and prepare.

Polly talks about why it’s important to teach children of all ages the hard facts about bushfires.
