Khloe Kardashian reveals her serious miscarriage risk and placenta-eating woes
The most recent episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians was jam-packed with baby-growing news, as Khloe Kardashian shared details of her high miscarriage risk – and worried about eating her own placenta.
“It’s torture”
The first-time mum-to-be explained she was taking progesterone pessaries to boost her hormone levels, and that the risk of her losing her baby was very, very real.
Never one to consider anything TMI, Khloe told her sisters that the progesterone was making her pregnancy an eye-wateringly uncomfortable experience.
“Literally, I can’t walk. I thought I was spotting … I realised it wasn’t from the inside. The outside is burned so bad, that it’s bleeding” Khloe revealed, noting this was “torture”.
“For sure I would have miscarried”
When Kourtney asked her why she was even putting herself through the supplements and side-effects, Khloe explained she had no choice.
“My doctor realised I have really low levels of progesterone, so I have to take progesterone supplements two to three times a day.”
“After you conceive, there’s a cyst that is filled with progesterone that normally pops and that keeps the sac in place,” Khloe told her sisters “and if not, that’s how you miscarry. She said for sure I would have miscarried [without the progesterone supplements]”
Kim and Kourtney urged her to head back to the doctor to discuss the extreme discomfort she was experiencing.
“Your poor vagina”
The side effects of vaginal progesterone are many, including the vaginal itching and burning Khloe mentioned as well as; bloating, digestive problems, mood changes, fatigue, dizziness, cramping and sore boobs. Ugh.
Thankfully, Khloe made it past the 12 week mark safely, and her doctor sorted out her nether regions (after sympathetically cooing “your poor vagina” and saying that stress and pregnancy were to blame).
A subsequent on-camera scan shows her tiny bub waving as he/she floats within her belly and next week’s ep promises to reveal more about the sex of the child.
No leaks, please
Khloe points out that her early pregnancy worries were part of the reason why she didn’t want to comment on her baby news – or have the details leaked by tabloid outlet, TMZ.
She eventually confirmed that she and her boyfriend Tristan Thompson are expecting their first baby in June, when the time was right for her.
Khloe revealed she’ll give birth to this baby in Cleveland, where she’s now based with basketball pro Tristan, flying her LA doctor in for the delivery.
Purple pills
When Kim asks Khloe if she’s planning on eating her placenta, Khloe visibly shudders as her sister quickly schools her on the logistics.
“I’m going to eat it in pills,” Khloe says uncertainly, appearing to be trying to convince herself this is a good idea.
“So you need the placenta person to come while it’s still fresh,” mum-of-three Kim explains.
“It’s not just like, a thing? At the hospital?” Khloe asks, aghast.
“No! You need to find a placenta company. And then like they knock on the door when you’re just giving birth and they’re like ‘the placenta pick-up’s here!'” Kim explains.
“How do I know that they’re giving me back my placenta?” Khloe worries.
“You don’t, but like with Saint, my placenta was double the size. It was really oddly big,” Kim overshares.
“Ew!” Khloe shudders.
“So she gave me two jars,” an unperturbed Kim continues.
“What are your jars of?” a confused Khloe asks.
“Purple pills,” Kim says matter-of-factly. “You like, pick a grape flavour or whatever …”
“No. you’re lying now,” Khloe says firmly.
“I swear!” Kim laughs.
“Grape flavoured placenta? Whaaaat? Ew,” Khloe declares.
Keeping up
This latest episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians covers all kinds of other baby-related subject matter, including Kourtney struggling with a decision about whether to freeze her eggs, and pondering if she’ll perhaps have a baby with someone other than her ex, Scott Disick, down the track. (Scott is father to Kourtney’s three children Mason, Penelope and Reign).
There was also discussion on Kim’s experience with these burn-y progesterone suppositories, we think during her pregnancy with Saint.
