Etsy started as a revolutionary platform to allow makers to sell their wares online, and it’s since evolved into a cutting-edge, curated marketplace with its roots still firmly in brilliant design and handmade.

Conscious curation

Interestingly the site’s bigwigs have just surveyed a whole bunch of families, asking them what’s important to them. They discovered that parents and kids are increasingly seeking out products that have a social conscience – and make a difference.

Etsy found that 69 percent of their surveyed parents chatted to their kids about social issues and politics on some level. Further, 75 percent of parents said they encouraged their kiddos to explore causes that were meaningful to them – even if those parents have differing views or interests.

This excellent shift towards living with responsibility and compassion clearly flows through into all areas of family life – including the stuff they buy – and Etsy shared a few of the key statement-making trends mums and dads are setting.

Tiny activists

Etsy say that 53 percent of parents they surveyed want their children to have an awareness of and engage in social or political issues. So families are snapping up chatty t-shirts and other products that promote activism. Here’s to raising passionate, world-changing little people!

Inclusivity first

Brilliantly, Etsy has noticed a strong trend toward making room for everyone, with the search term “inclusive products” increasing by 50 percent. They say “multiracial dolls with skin tones in every shade, dolls with hearing aids, and sensory-sensitive toys” are just a few of the toys parents are snaffling for their kids.

DIY and sustainability

Parents are not letting the war on waste or issues like conservation and global warming pass them by. They’re choosing carefully today to protect the world tomorrow, Etsy say.

“Living sustainably is more important than ever, and 40 percent of survey respondents saying that they are increasingly looking for sustainable toys.”
