Did someone just call Duchess Meghan a “fat lady” or say she had a “fat baby”?

Pup lover, Duchess of Sussex and mum-to-be Meghan was visiting a London charity yesterday when a lady made a rather startling observation about her bump.

Today The Duchess of Sussex made her first visit to @TheMayhew since becoming Patron – Mayhew is a grassroots charity working in a unique way to improve the lives of animals and people to better communities both in London and internationally. Mayhew looks for innovative ways to reduce the number of animals in need through pro-active community and educational initiatives and preventative veterinary care. Among the people she met was Wully, a formerly homeless pet refuge service user, and his two dogs Azzy and Gallis – The Duchess found out about the different ways Mayhew’s animal welfare officers have supported Wully and his pets over the past 11 years. Her Royal Highness also met Roobarb the dog, who is part of Mayhew’s dog therapy programme TheraPaws, which puts smiles on the faces of vulnerable individuals. The Duchess met volunteers who dedicate their time to Mayhew community programmes, including the trap, neuter and return programme, which controls and cares for the feral cat communities in London. And Her Royal Highness was also able to meet the team behind Mayhew’s international work, which includes an overseas vet training programme in countries like India and Afghanistan to help improve animal welfare.

“You’re a fat … LADY?”

The Duchess popped into the animal rescue charity called Mayhew to cuddle some dogs and hear more about the work the organisation does to improve the lives of dogs, cats and humans.

Shaking hands with some assembled people who worked with and benefited from Mayhew’s efforts one particular woman got very excited and forgot her filter.

“Lovely lady, you are! May the good Lord always bless you,” the woman is heard saying. Then she says either, “You’re a fat lady,” or “You’re a fat baby”.

Everyone burst out laughing – and Meghan did too – responding with a good-humoured, “I’ll take it!” before (rather quickly) moving on to meet the next person in line.

Whether she said “fat lady” or “fat baby” it’s clear that the observation was meant as a compliment – and she was simply congratulating the royal mum-to-be on the size of her bump.

The highest compliment

Social media was rather delighted by this unexpected exchange as footage of the incident was shared widely. Those in the “fat lady” camp explained that this sort of chatter was par for the course in some parts and meant kindly.

“Love it! Big compliment for a nice sized baby!” one Twitter user posted.

“She has a Bajan accent from Barbados where my mom is also from,” another person commented. “It was not given as an insult.”

“I knew as I read the response the person who said the remarks was an older Jamaican person! It’s hilarious as in Jamaica, many use that Term ‘fat’ for pregnancy!” someone else revealed.

“Fat BABY!”

Those in the “fat baby” camp also pointed out that this was a kindly delivered compliment – and wondered how anyone could have heard “fat lady”.

“Is this going to be our Yanny versus Laurel? I heard fat baby!” one Twitter user commented.

“She said, ‘Lovely Lady,’ then next is, ‘Fat Baby’,” another wrote.

“If you listen to the woman’s entire comment she first tells Meghan she’s a “lovely lady” and at the end, she tells Meghan that she has a ‘fat baby.'”
