Making sure photos capture your newborn’s precious first moments is at the forefront of the minds of parents-to-be. But a Brazilian couple has found a much greater purpose for sharing the photos from their daughter’s birth.
Photographer Gustavo Gomes has shared the raw and intimate moments of the home birth of his daughter Violeta to raise awareness of the benefits of natural home delivery in his home country, where elected c-sections are prevalent.
Gomes and his partner Priscila Bochi decided on a home birth after watching the documentary O Renascimento do Parto. Photographing everything that’s happened in his life since 2009, he said it was only natural for him to photograph the birth of his first daughter.
Gomes said he wanted to raise the benefits of a natural home birth. “Priscila and I never felt helpless during the whole process with a doula, an obstetrian and a pediatrician,” he tells Mashable. “We hope that these photos can demystify natural and home childbirths.”
Gomes captures the calm and the clearly painful moments of his girlfriend’s labor, which lasted 20 hours. “Photographing the labor didn’t stop me from hleping Priscila and being involved in the process. That’s why I don’t have any photo of Violeta coming out – I was there to be the first to hold her when she came to light.”
