Placenta burial and 5 other fascinating birthing rituals around the world
Giving birth is one of the weirdest, most surreal and yet ordinary occurrences that happens around the world all day, every day.
But despite what is a fairly straightforward process (there are usually only two ways the baby can exit!), each culture sees the moment of giving birth and the days that follow it in its own unique, sometimes spiritual, way. Here are some fascinating ways other cultures mark childbirth.
2. Ceremonies
In Egypt, a ceremony called Sebooh, is held for the seven-day-old baby, where the newborn is dressed in white and placed in a large ‘sieve’ where they are shaken gently by the mother to help them adjust to the ‘vagaries of life’.
In Armenia, the baby is placed on the floor surrounded by symbolic items, such as a book, measuring tape, set of scales or a wooden spoon. The child is encouraged to play with one of these items, which will predict the kind of future he’ll have.
