OMG! Mum gives birth to 5.9kg baby without pain relief

Lauren Flaugher and family

A US mum has birthed a baby boy without any drugs or medical interventions, and the little guy weighed in at a whopping 13 pounds (that’s 5.9kg!)

Breed ’em big

Lauren Flaugher had been told her baby was on the larger side at her 20 week scan, but when Finn finally made his appearance, she realised large really did mean LARGE!

Keen to find out exactly how big, big was post-delivery, midwives weighing him had their best laid plans turned upside-down.

“The scale only went up to 12 pounds, so our midwife looked at me and said, ‘We can’t use it’ I thought the scale was broken! They had to bring in a bigger, digital scale,” Lauren told People Magazine.

The bigger scale confirmed that the “little” boy was a generous 13 pounds of adorable bouncing baby and Lauren must have thanked her lucky stars she didn’t know this heading into labour.

As some of you know, there have been a lot of news stories about my wife, Lauren, and the birth of our son, Finn, over…

Preparation was key

Finn is the second child for Lauren and her husband Joe. He was born on May 3 at a midwife-staffed Missouri birthing centre.

Lauren told People she coped with the birth by spending lots of time in the birthing centre’s bath. Plenty of careful preparation ensured that she delivered this baby not only vaginally, but completely drug-free. Mindset played a huge role in keeping things on track, Lauren said.

“Part of the prep for natural birth was not to think of it as painful, but intense. And it was really intense — I felt very aware of what was happening to my body.”

Changing things up

Inspired to birth naturally after reading Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth, Lauren said a little hitch along the way was resolved by staying calm and trying lots of varied labour positions.

“When I was pushing he got a little stuck, so we did some different manoeuvres.” recalls Flaugher.

When asked how Finn was after the birth, Lauren said he was a healthy little boy with no complications whatsoever.

“[The midwives] were never concerned about his weight after birth, his blood sugar was good and he wanted to nurse right away and frequently after birth.”

It’s so good to hear that birthing a bigger baby can be a positive experience for some mums!  Did you have a big baby?
