Mum takes uni exam – while in labour

Talk about multi-tasking – not even a gruelling 20-hour labour was going to stop this mum from taking a college exam.

Tommitrise Collins went into labour the same day she was due to take a two-hour psychology test at Middle Georgia State University. Instead of skip the exam, she was determined to complete it – in the delivery suite.

Her sister, Shanell Brinkley-Chapman, took a photo of the 21-year-old in her hospital gown at an Atlanta hospital, which has since gone viral on Facebook. “This is what you call ‘strong priorities’,” she writes on the post. “Contractions (three) minutes apart and still takes her psychology test! You are going to be a great Mom baby sis.”

Tommitrise tells Fox 5 Atlanta she finished her exam in 90 minutes. “It took me four to five hours after the opening of the test to try to put the pain to the side and do it so I wouldn’t have to do it later and I could enjoy my newborn,” she says.

She’s doing just that with her daughter, Tyler Elise, who was born on November 12. She also passed the exam – but then opted to retake it to improve her score, ultimately getting a B.

And she intends to keep studying to complete her criminal justice degree. “(My daughter) is my life now, and the way I look at it is, she will always have me to depend on, so my goals will not be put on hold,” she tells Fox 5 Atlanta. “I don’t want to just barely make it by, I want my child to live comfortably, and I want to show people that just because I am considered a young mother doesn’t mean I have to be considered a bad mother.”
