Mother’s look of surprise as she delivers a boy instead of her expected girl

Imagine being told your baby was one sex, only to give birth to the opposite! That’s exactly what happened to first-time mum Koto Nakamura and her birth photographer even managed to capture her priceless expression the moment she was told the news.

After being told they were having a girl, Koto and her husband Sina Niakansafy received many pink gifts and settled on the name Hinata for their daughter.

But when delivery day arrived, Koto was shocked to learn she had given birth to a boy.

“I thought everyone was joking,” Koto told Today.  “I was shocked for a few seconds, and then it didn’t matter if it was a girl or a boy.”

The couple chose the name Taiga, a Japanese name meaning big and gracious, for their new son.

Tasmanian birth photographer Jes Jackson, who was perfectly placed to snap Koto’s look of surprise, told Today the midwife had only just shared a similar story about a previous patient with them while Koto was in labour.

“We were all laughing and joking about it, saying, ‘Oh gosh, as if that would happen to us’,” Jes says.

“We were trying to imagine how the mother must have felt — little did we know it was about to happen to Koto, too.”

In her four years as a photographer the moment was a first for Jes, who owns Itty Bitty Photography and posted the fabulous shot to Instagram.

“This was one of the most amazing moments — a roller coaster of emotions in just a few short minutes,” she says.

“Pure shock, disbelief, excitement, happiness and relief. This is the reason why birth photography is so important. Imagine when (the baby) is all grown up and his parents are telling his birth story to him and they have these images to share the way they looked when they found out this news.”

Imagine going to extraordinary lengths to reveal the baby’s sex in the cracker way the Driscoll family chose, only to find it was wrong. How would you feel if you were told to expect one sex but delivered another?
